There's no place like home, right? Well, the leaders of major companies who have been summoned by the US council would probably prefer to stay at home. Donald Trump and his wife Melania not so much. They have caught the coronavirus and have to be quarantined!
The Trumps have coronavirus
Donald Trump and his wife Melania tested positive for coronavirus. The US president confirmed it on his Twitter account.
"Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"
(@FLOTUS is the name of Melanie Trump's Twitter account, ed. note).
This happened after coronavirus had been confirmed in his 31-year-old assistant Hope Hicks. The president traveled with her aboard an Air Force One earlier this week, when they were heading for a television debate in Ohio. On boarding the plane in Cleveland, Hope Hicks was photographed without a face mask or a respirator.
Czech Republic still has one of the lowest unemployment rates
According to the Czech Statistical Office, the general unemployment rate of 15-64-year-olds reached 2.8% in August this year and increased by 0.8 percentage points year on year. The seasonally adjusted male unemployment rate reached 2.7% and the female unemployment rate 2.8%.
"August was a completely standard month in terms of the main indicators of the Czech labor market, people worked the same number of hours as in August last year. Unemployment has been rising slightly since February, but compared to other EU countries, ours is still the lowest,"
said Dalibor Holý, Director of the Labor Market and Equal Opportunities Statistics Department of the CZSO.
Leaders of Facebook, Twitter and Google to be chewed out
Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey will have a lot of explaining to do. The U.S. Senate Trade Committee voted in favor of summoning them for questioning. In practice, this means that they will face being quizzed by senators about their policies on different types of content. One focus will be the legal protections they enjoy regarding what they leave up and take down on their platforms. They are also likely to be challenged over controversies about privacy and misinformation.
"There has never been such an aggregation of power in the history of humankind as big tech enjoys today,"
Republican Senator Ted Cruz said following the vote.
The subpoenas follow an earlier hearing in July when Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google's chiefs testified to a House committee about competition issues and claims of bias. Hopefully, the famous trio will pass with flying colors!
