Gypsy Vanner

Irish Gypsy horse

This breed is known by the names Irish Tinker, Irish Cob or gypsy horse. This deluxe breed of horse comes from Ireland and its name links it to the Irish people and also gypsy travellers who travelled in heavy carts, gypsy caravans.

The Gypsy Vanner horse was exported to the United States, where Dennis and Cindy Thompson arranged registration, for the first time in 1996. The first two horses called Bat and Dolly arrived in the USA in November 1996 and were soon followed by another 14 horses. Today’s gypsy horses are bred to have a very calm temperament and are considered one of the most honest, hard-working and finest breeds of horse in the world.

How would you describe it? A horse with typical deluxe “feathers”!

Imagine a smaller, well-built horse, often skewbald, with a shaggy coat. It has enormous strength. It has an arched neck, smaller, turned-in ears, a rounded and correctly heavy chest and majestic legs covered in heavy feathers beginning at the knees.

This horse should have a beautifully combed mane and a very wide and thick tail, which is not set too high and can reach all the way to the ground. When a Gypsy starts moving, it looks like it is flying, the long feathers on the legs create an amazing effect.

You will certainly never confuse this deluxe horse breed with any other!
