The Czech Republic was hit by some very sad news. Singer Eva Pilarová has gone to musician's heaven. The winner of three Golden Nightingales, who is indelibly connected to the Semafor Theater, Waldemar Matuška or Karel Gott, succumbed to a long illness.

Born and raised in Brno, she become widely known in the 1960s when she was performing at the Semafor theater alongside the legendary duo Jiří Suchý and Jiří Šlitr, among others. The singer with a strong soprano and a three-octave range is famous for hits such as Hrom aby do tě, lásko má, Requiem, Noc a den (Night and Day), Láska nebeská or Oliver Twist.

The public also came to love her duets with Waldemar Matuška, and her duet with Karel Gott Dotýkat se hvězd from the musical Kdyby tisíc klarinetů had great success as well. The singer who, in addition to the three Golden Nightingales, also received the Masaryk Academy Award, the South Moravian Region Award and the Medal of Merit, has suffered several fractures, had a number of surgeries and has been in the care of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo in recent weeks.

"I will always remember Eva not only as a queen of swing, but above all as a great person. "People often ask me, whom I consider my top guests... it was she. I went to her little 80th birthday concert on the boat deck with my mother, who had it as a big surprise, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Her energy was amazing. I'm so sorry, my condolences to the whole family,"

Memorial service canceled due to coronavirus

Eva Pilarová's funeral was profoundly influenced by the measures imposed to stop the spreading of the coronavirus. Although the singer would have deserved a splendid farewell like those that some of her colleagues and friends had gotten, in light of the current situation, no memorial service will take place.
