And where should you set out for? The markets in Dresden are an annual classic which we will enhance this year with a choice of locations which may seem unconventional to you.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The oldest amusement park in Europe, Tivoli in Copenhagen, comes alive as is now the tradition at Christmastime. The big lake there serves as a luxury ice rink, the air is fragrant with the aroma of mulled wine mixed with liqueur and spices (gløgg) and Santa Claus can be seen bearing gifts. The market is in full swing from 19 November and apart from other things, you can buy traditional porcelain or wooden dolls there. Don’t forget to ride the merry-go-round, roller coaster or big wheel.

Budapest, Hungary

Combine a visit to the luxury spas here with a stroll around the Vörösmart Christmas market which is one of the oldest and internationally renowned. Among other things, you can find here folk art and a cultural programme. Opening the windows of the advent calendar takes place in the form of a light show on the Gerbeaud building. You can enjoy the luxury “flódni” cake with nuts, poppy seed and plums. If you take your children with you, don’t forget to pack their ice skates. Budapest transforms into one of the largest city ice rinks in the winter. The markets in Budapest have already started and go on until 6 January.

Tallinn, Estonia

Beautiful markets surrounded by the medieval atmosphere of Tallinn square offer a luxurious Christmas atmosphere. It is even claimed that the first Christmas tree in the world was erected here, this allegedly having happened in 1441. In Tallinn, it is very likely that you really will experience a white Christmas. So it is no surprise that such luxurious surroundings attract couples in love to take romantic walks here. Buy warm knitted clothing and visit boutiques and galleries offering unconventional products with a unique design. The markets traditionally last until the first week of January.

Milan, Italy

Experience a luxurious choice of more than 3,000 exhibitions from 130 countries. A Christmas trade fair is held every year at Fiera Milano in Milan, attracting visitors to buy original and luxurious Christmas presents from manufacturers from all over the world. Make sure not to miss the varied local offer of food and drink – ranging from Italian coffee to Caribbean drinks and from Italian spaghetti right through to Indian specialities. Simply put, whatever you long for, you will always find something in Milan.

Prague, Czech Republic

What will the advent markets in Prague be like? Traditionally the largest will be those on the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square and the market on Náměstí Míru which is continuing to grow in popularity. Advent stalls with a Christmas atmosphere will be offering mulled wine, beer, good food and a great deal of Christmas inspiration.

Markets will be taking place from 26 November until 1 January 2017.
