The historical centre of the town was founded by the Moravian Prince Otto II, who was victorious in his battle with the Bohemian Prince Břetislav in 1099. The town enjoyed its greatest boom in the 2nd half of the 16th century and played an important role throughout the whole of the region at the start of the 19th century.

The dominant feature in Telč is the Tower of the Holy Spirit, offering luxurious views of the town and its surrounding areas.
