A year since Karel Gott's death, objects reminiscent of his great and successful life keep appearing. Many people are buying his stamps, want to see his film in the cinema and hope they manage to score a copy of his autobiography. Five months ago, his painting was auctioned off, since, as is well known, the Maestro could work not only with a microphone, but also with a brush. And, lo and behold, a few days after the anniversary of his death, there's another painting! The Bouquet of Roses will be auctioned throughout October.
The company Obrazy v aukci s.r.o. put Gott's painting up for auction in early October. The starting price is 1,000 crowns, the minimum bid is 100 crowns and the auction ends on October 29 at 9 p.m.
"The painting is signed by the author at the bottom right and dated 1981. This work was entrusted to our auction house by a private collector,"
said the owner of the auction company Jaroslav Jakubec.
Gott is known for always having given his paintings as gifts and never having sold a single one.
"Karel Gott gave the painting Bouquet of Roses to Colonel Miloslav Soukup, a Border Guard official, for his 55th birthday, and the Colonel gifted it to the current owner. There is a photograph from the birthday party glued on the back of the painting, which features Karel Gott, the wife of the then Prime Minister Lubomír Štrougal and Miloslav Soukup. The artwork was painted with oil paints on canvas. Its dimensions are 47x37 cm without frame,”
In the past, the highest price achieved for a painting by the author was CZK 2,040,000, including the auction surcharge. In June 2020, a painting by Karel Gott - The Divas Are Singing for President Havel - was auctioned off at the auction gallery Obrazy v aukci - for CZK 1,440,000.
Last minute bidding is a given
From experience, bidders take their time with such unique items. The auction ends at 9 pm, but if someone places a bid a minute before 9 pm, another five minutes count towards the next bid. Due to this, the auction may drag on. The same thing happened when Gott's last painting was being auctioned, with the last bid having been placed at almost 10.30 pm.
The company Obrazy v aukci, s.r.o. has been on the market since 1992, and since 2012, it's been engaged exclusively in online auctions. It holds 20 auctions a year, each with more than 500 items with a success rate of 98% for all listed items. In the past, the auction company organized for example the very frequently mentioned auction of the art collection of composer Petr Hapka.
