The modern wonders of the world have been determined by popularity, i.e. the number of votes submitted by people across the globe. The poll was initiated by adventurer Bernard Weber. Is your favorite one among them?

1. The Great Wall of China

The purpose of the Great Wall of China was to protect China from Mongolian raids. According to legends, it was built on the bodies of dead people in the 5th-3th century BC. Its total length today is 8851 km.

2. Statue of Christ the Redeemer

On the Corcovado hill above the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro stands a a luxurious gigantic statue of Jesus Christ with open arms, made of reinforced concrete. The statue is 30m tall and was built between 1922 and 1931 by the French sculptor Maximilien Paula Landowski.

3. Machu Picchu

In the middle of a tropical forest in Peru, in the Cuzco area, lies a natural gem related to a pre-Columbian Inca city. You will see giant walls, terraces and ramps that seem to be naturally emerging from the cliff. The most important monuments of this place are the stone of Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun and the Room of the Three Windows.

4. Petra

You can find this archaeological site in Jordan. The luxury building is carved into the rock and was founded in 312 BC. It is often used as a movie set, like in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

5. Colosseum

The amphitheater, an iconic symbol of the imperial city of Rome, dates from 70-82 AD. It is one of the greatest works of Roman architecture. The capacity can host up to 80,000 spectators. It used to serve for gladiator competitions, fights with animals, or executions.

6. Taj Mahal

The luxury ivory-white marble mausoleum lies on the banks of the Indian Yamuna River in Agra. In 1962, Shah Jahan built it for his wife. Interesting facts about the building HERE.

7. Chichen Itza

The ruins of a Mayan city are located on the Mexican Yucatan peninsula. The most famous building is the Kukulcan Pyramid.
